Fair Play - Design & Discovery

Fair Play

“FairPlay is a marvelous experience for girls. My daughter had a terrific time learning and applying the principles of engineering in a setting that was comfortable, stimulating and rigorous…The encouraging participation of many engineers, especially the women, conveyed to these girls that engineering is a world that women belong in…FairPlay helped give her the confidence to ignore the gender stereotype and pursue her interest.”    - Parent of a 2004 participant

Fair Play: Design and Discovery is a design and engineering initiative for girls entering the 7th - 12th grade. It involves girls in the exploration of design and engineering concepts during an interactive two-week day camp program, followed by an optional six-month mentorship experience with a working engineer.

With a focus on the designed world around us, girls explore fundamental concepts of engineering and design through hands-on activities and behind-the-scenes field trips. Girls meet and work with engineers, designers, and researchers — the people that sculpt the material world. During the camp, each girl completes an independent project. She will begin by improving existing designs and wind up developing her own invention. Along the way, girls learn how to wire electronic devices, apply mechanical principles, and develop an eye for improving everyday objects. Girls present their inventions in a Solutions Showcase the final day of camp.

Following the day camp, girls may continue their projects to the completion of a working prototype. Girls are matched with adult mentors. Mentors are typically engineers or designers with experience in the subject area of the project. Girls present their final projects at a Mini Engineering Fair and are supported in entering projects in the Northwest Science Expo.
