Luella & George Shaver Family Scholarship
Deadline January 23, 2009
The Luella and George Shaver Family Scholarship is given to an outstanding Girl Scout who best demonstrates within her Girl Scout years, the same qualities that Luella Shaver, a long time, dedicated volunteer showed so well in her own, dedicated life as a Girl Scout.
The scholarship began in 1982 and has been given to many deserving girls over the years. With the recent passing of Mr. George Shaver, the Shaver family decided to make a significant contribution to the scholarship fund to help reward and encourage exceptional Girl Scouts to attend college.
Luella Shaver began her Girl Scout troop leadership years in the Lake Oswego area and continued after a move to Portland. She started with one Girl Scout troop but soon was leading three troops as her daughters became ready to be Brownies. Her deep dedication to Girl Scouting was apparent in the remembrance shared by her daughter, Mary, that quitting piano lessons could be tolerated but quitting Girl Scouts – never!
In addition to her Girl Scout troop activities, Luella volunteered in the neighborhood, soon becoming the chair. She also worked with council staff on fundraising activities including the annual cookie sale. She became well known and loved throughout the metropolitan area as she exemplified true Girl Scout values and vision.
As she faced a diagnosis of cancer in 1980, she told her family that she must face this crisis as a Senior Girl Scout faces a challenge, with all her strength and will and dignity.
Her love for Girl Scouting was so pervasive throughout her life that at her death the following year, the family asked for contributions to go to the Girl Scouts - Columbia River Council instead of sending traditional flowers. The amount the council received was so great that the family decided to establish a scholarship fund for an exceptional graduating Senior Girl Scout.
While the award amount has fluctuated over the years, the family’s recent decision to establish an endowment will ensure that the Luella and George Shaver Family Scholarship Fund will be available forever. The scholarship recipient is determined by a special committee and panel of judges, including Luella’s daughters Mary and Zee Zee Shaver.
This scholarship is given to one Senior Girl Scout registered at Columbia River Council for educational pursuits, such as college, vocational training and/or apprenticeship programs at an accredited school.
