Become a Volunteer

Without volunteers, Girl Scouting couldn't happen. Helping girls develop their potential and achieve their dreams is a fulfilling and inspiring challenge, and being involved means something different to everyone. You can tailor your participation so that it fits right into your life.

Whether you have 30 minutes or 30 years of volunteer time to offer, there is a place for you at Girl Scouts – Columbia River Council. We have many diverse and worthwhile opportunities for every type of volunteer.

We encourage you to take some time to peruse the volunteer opportunities listed below, find out what suits your schedule and abilities, and contact us for more information. Thank you for all you do for girls!

Volunteer Opportunities

Innovative Programs

  • GSBB – work with girls whose mothers are incarcerated in a Girl Scout troop setting. Troop meetings are held in a correctional facility. Volunteers are needed to transport girls to the facility, coordinate other volunteers and lead fun programs. Interest or experience with incarcerated women and at-risk girls. Must have reliable transportation. Must be able to pass Girl Scout and State Corrections Department background checks.
  • Science, Tech, Engineering, Math – Helping to engage girls in technology is one of the most important factors in creating tomorrow’s workforce. Only 20% of engineering program students are female and only half of that number are currently employed as engineers! Help Girl Scouts facilitate a variety of programs aimed at bridging this gender gap and offering girls real world experience.
  • Hispanic Initiative - This initiative is dedicated to supporting Latina/Hispanic adult and girl participation in Girl Scouts-Columbia River Council. We are looking for volunteers from all backgrounds. Bilingual ability is especially needed.
    • Bilingual Liaison
Serve the needs of Spanish-speaking Girl Scouts
    • Bilingual Translator
Provide bilingual support to Troop Leaders and other volunteers
    • Guest Speaker

Troop/Group Leader

  • A Troop Leader serves as adult friend, teacher and role model to a group of girls. Leaders provide Girl Scout program in keeping with the mission of Girl Scouting: to inspire girls with the highest ideals of character, conduct, patriotism and service that they may become happy and resourceful citizens.

The term is for one year (renewable) and the time commitment is flexible. Troops meet at a time convenient for the girls and adults involved in the troop, which can be weekly, every other week, or (typically for older girls) on a monthly basis.

An eager team of local volunteers and Council staff support Troop Leaders throughout the Girl Scout year.

You may want to serve in the troop with the girl in your life. You can also be a Troop Leader or help with a Troop that serves Hispanic girls, girls in low-income housing or other areas of interest to you.

Day Camps
Summer 2009

  • Interested in volunteering at a Girl Scout Day Camp? We are looking for Volunteer Camp Directors, Core Staff and Unit Leaders! Please contact Caroline Adair with interest and questions at CAdair@GirlScoutsOSW.org or 503-977-6810.

Discovery Programs

  • Discovery Programs are a new pathway for girls to be involved in Girl Scouts - Columbia River Council in a way that fits their interests and schedules. These programs may be one time sessions or multiple consecutive sessions, focusing on various topics from healthy living to science, to literacy. Help offer girls, whether they are already registered or are new to Girl Scouts, the opportunity to experience the power of Girl Scouting!

Administrative Help

  • Assist with office tasks in our Administrative and Resource departments or in the Girl Scout Store. Tasks may include data entry, filing, inventory, stocking, labeling, stuffing mailers, and possibly assisting customers. While not working directly with girls, this type of volunteerism is a great help to providing back end support!
